Hopes that a new overground train station could be coming to Brixton have been raised after the Mayor of London earmarked the area for a transport link.
A train station for Brixton was mentioned in Boris Johnson’s London Infrastructure Plan 2050, published last month.
The mayor seemed to rule out an immediate upgrade, however, when he said the cost of the station would be “highly unaffordable” at between £80m and £120m at Mayor’s Question Time on July 23.
He went on to say that reopening Bixton East Station in Barrington Lane, though cheaper at a cost of up to £50m, would have “much lower benefits” because of its location away from the town centre.
Councillor Florence Eshalomi said Brixton transport must be improved in light of the rapid rate of population grown in the borough.
“I am proud of the excellent transport links that we have in Brixton,” she said.
“But a new station is something we need to pursue. The mayor needs to recognise that transport in Lambeth must match the increasing population.”
