Lambeth fail to act on residents’ CPZ petition

Despite a residents’ petition of over 600 signatures requesting Lambeth Council deliver on their promise to review the parking restrictions in Josephine Avenue and other roads contained in the Brixton Hill ‘Q’ Controlled Parking Zone, the council have yet again refused to act. Here is our Cooperative Council’s reply received yesterday…

    Ref: P.14.15.002

    Dear [Resident]

We acknowledge the concerns of all residents regarding parking and traffic problems in Brixton Hill, around Josephine Avenue, Leander Road , Arodene Road, Appach Road and Helix Road. The Councl is committed to addressing these issues which can normally be resolved by an introduction of a controlled parking zone (CPZ) or other changes to the highways, such as speed restrictions or changes to road layouts.

There is however a statutory process which has to be followed and this includes undertaking local engagement and formal consultation on any proposed changes. This is often a lengthy and expense process. As a result of the central government’s 50% cut to the council’s budget we have limited funding to implement any parking changes. The funding and resources for this year have already been allocated and are focussed on delivering an agreed programme. We regret therefore that the council is not in a position to undertake any CPZ reviews in your road this financial year.

I am sorry I cannot be more positive on this occasion but I have made a note of your request so that it can  be followed up when resources become available.

    Yours sincerely

What we do next will be discussed at our next JAG meeting to be held on Monday 15th September.
