Lambeth Council News reports that Derrick Anderson, Chief Executive of Lambeth Borough Council, will be leaving his £229,290 per annum job at the end of the year. Although originally meant to be a six year term, Mr Anderson has held the position since 2006.
Derrick Anderson, CBE, Chief Executive of Lambeth Borough Council is stepping down at the end of the year.
Derrick Anderson was appointed in 2006 to run the authority in what were then challenging and difficult times. Today, Lambeth is rated outstanding, in key services, and widely recognised for pioneering the cooperative council way of working with local people.
The first, and only black Chief Executive of a London local authority, Derrick Anderson was awarded a CBE for services to local government in 2003 and named Guardian Public Leader of the Year in 2012.
He said: “I’ve spent nearly nine years at Lambeth and I am extremely proud of what we; citizens, councillors and staff have achieved. Lambeth is a fantastic place to work and an even better place to live – I’ve a great fondness for the borough I call home. This has been an extremely rewarding role but it is the right time for me to pursue my other passions. I’ve always been driven by an ambition to change the world – I believe I’ve been doing this in a small way in Lambeth – and I hope to build on this in tackling issues which matter not just locally but internationally. These are challenging times for all local authorities but I know that under Lib Peck’s leadership, Lambeth council and its residents are in good hands.”
Cllr Lib Peck, Leader of Lambeth council said: “Over the last ten years Lambeth council has transformed its services and reputation and Derrick has played an extremely influential role in delivering those improvements. He leaves Lambeth in a much better place than when he started; and a borough known for its innovation and committed to opening up opportunity to all whilst ensuring fairness at the heart of our decision making. Derrick is rightly known for his principled and determined leadership and he will be very much missed.”
A replacement is expected to be appointed by the end of the year.

In line with our usual process for senior appointments, Lambeth Council will be engaging specialist headhunters. Several companies listed on the London Boroughs Recruitment Partnership framework will be invited to bid for this assignment.
The salary offered is expected to be between £150k – £180k – less than that of the outgoing Chief Executive. This reflects the financial challenges facing the administration and changes to its structure and scope.
