Controlled Parking Update

Residents from Controlled Parking Zone ‘Q’ Brixton Hill (which includes our roads) met with local councillor, Mary Atkins on Wedneday to ask her to present our  petition to the Mayor of Lambeth asking for a reduction in the hours of operation to two hours a day. She agreed to get this on the agenda and present the over 600 strong petition at the next full council meeting in mid July.  This is a public meeting so residents will be able to attend, watch proceedings, hold up banners etc. etc. This will be held:

Council Meeting, Wednesday 23rd July at 7:30pm
    Council Chamber, Lambeth Town Hall

This will be a simple handing over of documents to the mayor with no discussion at this stage. We will be sent a formal acknowledgement in writing. The petition is then passed to the parking finance department, who will add us to a list of zones also seeking a review or change.

If we are chosen to be reviewed, Lambeth are then legally obliged to carry out a statutory consultation of all impacted residents before any change can be implemented. Clearly this costs money but it could be argued that this money could be offset by the subsequent reduction in traffic wardens. Mary was unable to provide any figures on funds generated from parking tickets versus the cost of running the parking zone.

Councillor Mary Atkins was asked to follow this up with Lambeth Parking on a quarterly basis and provide an update in September. Mary also voiced the opinion that parking should be reviewed over a much wider area including all streets in the Tulse Hill, South Circular and Brixton Hill triangle. However this would cost a lot more money and may slow down our application for a review.

    We’ll keep you posted.
