Before Sainsburys opens next week it seemed an apt time to remember the old skating rink that used to occupy the site (care of Urban75)…
Opened in 1910, Brixton Skating Rink ‘The Home of Skate Dancing’ was situated in Effra Road and was a popular venue until it closed around 1965. The end apparently came swiftly, with the site being bought by a developer and the rink promptly closed with little public consultation. Let’s hope the new Sainsburys proves as useful a local amenity, if a little less unusual.
