Lambeth Labour is campaigning to bring Boris Bikes to Brixton. Cllr Jenny Brathwaite, the Cabinet member for the Environment, has written to the Mayor of London asking for the cycle hire scheme to be extended further south of the river.

In her letter to Boris Johnson, Cllr Brathwaite argues:

“Lambeth Council has made a significant commitment to ensuring that our borough is the most cycle-friendly in London and the extension of the Cycle Hire Scheme would represent an important contribution to that ambition.

Brixton is a thriving town centre going through extensive regeneration so its population is set to grow and it is essential to meet the transport demands that this brings in a sustainable way.”

The local Labour party successfully campaigned to extend the reach of Boris Bikes to Stockwell back in 2013.

Twelve new docking stations around the Stockwell area were agreed. Stockwell tube station is currently the closest bike location to Brixton.

Lambeth Council has ambitious aims to make the borough the most cycle friendly in London.

The letter from Cllr Brathwaite adds that Lambeth has the third highest commuter journeys made by bike in London. Brixton tube station is currently the 9th busiest on the network.
