A letter to Mr Anderson about our parking.

To keep up pressure on the Council to carry out the promised Controlled Parking Zone review we have been advised by the Ombudsman that individual residents now need to raise a formal complaint. By law this must be dealt with by the Town Hall, and if we are still dissatisfied we can then ask the Ombudsman to investigate.

    Dear Mr Anderson

This is a formal complaint regarding the lack of due process regarding review of the Controlled Parking Zone ‘Q’ Brixton Hill.

I was initially told in late 2005 that after the initial six months of the scheme there would be a review when I would be given the opportunity to comment and amendments would be made depending on the views of the majority of residents. However the scheme was implemented in January 2006 and no formal review has ever taken place.

I have been told that the Josephine Avenue Group, JAG, has questioned the Council and been told that “local councillors and community representatives” were consulted. However, the local councillor at the time Councillor Toren Smith and then chair of JAG Mr Garry Turnbull say they were never asked. Also it was the residents who were promised the review, not hand picked representatives.

If I had been given the opportunity of a review I would have asked that the hours of operation of the CPZ be reduced to 2 hours a day. This would stop the commuter parking, but still allow visitors, trades people, friends and deliveries to come to my house. There has recently been a petition of over 600 affected residents who said they too want this scheme changed, so I am not alone in my views.

To remedy the frustration caused by the present punitive parking measures I ask that the council carry out due democratic process and review the scheme as promised.

    Your sincerely
