The Urban Art weekend is finally here and Open Arts Project are promising a fantastic two days of inspiring Art, tasty food and some pretty amazing Graffiti work. All charity partners, including JAG, have fulfilled their promise of providing volunteers and with record numbers of visitors predicted this could be a our best fund raiser yet.
Among the exhibitors will be some familiar faces such as Martin Grover, Jennifer Taylor, Steve Yeates, Jennie Ing, Jim Hanlon, Kate Bowe and Lucy Duke. We also have a whole new batch of artists who will be trying out our railings for the first time so lots of new work to see.
Highlights will include Harriett Riddell’s sewn portraits outside 1 Helix Gardens where she will be working live on her trusty sewing machine. Priscilla Watkins is returning again on Saturday on the railings of 35 Josephine Avenue with her amazing Brockwell Lido swimmer paintings. As well as the usual scrumptious food stalls we also have some tasty local Volcano coffee being served from the Toasted Pip cart outside 25 Josephine Avenue. Time and Leisure magazine have also organised a wonderful kids painting competition, based on the theme of family, with the winning entries being displayed on stand N10 in the pedestrianised area of the fair.
Last year’s Street Art Area at the Brixton Hill end of the avenue proved such a success that this is being repeated. The train is being brought out of storage and the three white wall triangles are being rebuilt. Julian Phethean of Positive Arts has brought together an impressive line up of top London graffiti artists who will start spraying Saturday morning and aim to finish the work by Sunday afternoon. Both the train and walls will then be moved to Brixton Square to be exhibited the following week.
This really should be our best year yet so fingers crossed for good weather.
