Residents from roads included in the Brixton Hill ‘Q’ Controlled Parking Zone have been meeting to discuss how to get the council to reduce the current hours of operation from ten hours down to two. The present scheme was introduced in 2005 to solve the chronic number of commuters who were then parking in local streets. However the Council’s questionnaire was very simplistic, only asking when the street got busy and when the cars went away; hence our current over-long operation hours of 8:30am to 6:30pm.
However it soon became pretty clear to residents that all we actually needed was two hours of controlled parking during the middle of the day to stop the commuters, but still allowing residents deliveries, services, friends to pop by, etc. during the rest of the day.
We were promised a six month review from Lambeth but this never happened. Consequently we have been stuck with a punitive Controlled Parking Scheme whose purposes seems more to be about generating money for the the Town Hall (and creating more traffic wardens), rather than helping local residents, businesses and practical day-to-day living.
We have decided enough is enough and have organised a petition which we will be taking door to door over the next couple of weeks. If you have some spare time and would like to help with the signing of this petition please get in touch.
