Here is the latest news regarding the proposed pedestrian crossings outside the Effra Road Sainsburys, plus signage, road markings, removal of temporary generatro etc, via Councillor Marcia Cameron…
“We had a productive meeting with Transport for London (TFL) and LB Lambeth (LCC) on site at Brixton to further push our request to make contribution towards highway improvements at Brixton Water Lane junction.
It is a lengthy process to get works designed and approved due to the road being a part of the Strategic Road Network (SRN). The positive news is that all parties have agreed a process to design a scheme that should improve pedestrian safety at the junction without big effects on traffic flow.
The proposals put forward are to put a pedestrian crossing (PED) on at least 3 arms of the junction and a potential Zebra crossing further along Water Lane. (We are still arguing for a full PED on all 4 arms).
Vectos is working on behalf of Sainsburys and is leading the design and survey stage. TFL have agreed to get the proposed works on their program. This Program has a waiting period of anywhere up to 18 months so actual implementation of the design if it is approved could be some time down the track.
On a more positive note the additional zebra crossing on Brixton Water Lane only requires LB Lambeth approval and this will be a quicker process (3-6months) This has significant benefits to pedestrians. This process will be led through the local council.
We aim to have all our surveys and designs ready to submit to TFL by October to allow our surveys to be completed outside of the quite holiday periods.
Sainsbury’s architects are in the process of designing a new closed canopy for the delivery area that will meet the H&S fire regulations. Once this is completed and approved we can lodge it with LB Lambeth for planning approval.
We have ordered new signage warning of pedestrians for the car park exit. Anticipated these will be installed in the next 14 days.
We have ordered 2 x speed reduction humps and will look to get installed either this weekend or the following. (This will need to happen outside of trading hours for H&S reasons).
In regards to the land between the car park and Brixton Water Lane (BWL) this is not Sainsbury’s land so hopefully the requests for hatching and no right turn signs can be actioned by LB Lambeth. Sainsbury’s will support this.
Signage is now in place to engage colleagues and enforce a no work zone in the external areas between 11pm and 7am to avoid annoyance to neighbours.
UK Power networks start to complete the install of the new power sub station this Friday and we hope to switch to mains power in the next 2/3 weeks so that we can get the temporary generator removed from site ASAP.”
